Let me set the scene…  Imagine,  a low lit room  with 6-8 judges sitting at a table ready to judge your work… your work that you spent hours, days, weeks or months creating…  There is a large panel in front of the judges that has a 16×20 opening for the prints to be seen through…  there are print handlers behind the panel that put up a print and then call out the title…  the Judges backs are to you as you sit in a room full of other photographers anxiously watching each print come through, waiting to see their own…    The next thing you know, your print title is called out, the butterflies start going crazy in your tummy then the print turns… the judges stare at it, some even get up for a closer look, they critique it, occasionally discuss it and sometimes argue their point of view which can raise or lower your score.  Then they score it.  You hope  for an 80 or above with your fingers crossed,  then your number is called out…  Sometimes the score is what you hoped for and sometimes it’s not.  Everyone tries their hardest but some people leave disappointed and it’s hard… it’s a roller coaster of emotions but it’s also very exciting.  You learn by listening to the judges critiques… sometimes you see what they see and sometimes you don’t.

How do we pick the images we enter?   Throughout the year we put our favorite images in a folder… and look at them through ‘a judges eye’.   There are 12 elements the judges look for in each image.  Impact, Technical Excellence, Creativity, Style, Composition, Presentation, Color Balance, Center of Interest, Lighting, Subject Mater, Technique and Story Telling.   It’s hard to pick just 4 things to enter especially when you love so many of the images taken throughout the year.    I usually enter a senior book from a current senior but this year it was too hard to pick one because I liked them all and was too emotionally tied to the people in them.  However, I might enter some of them next year.      I am entering a book from last  year and a book of a new friend plus  two non-senior portraits.   Karissa is entering a cute little salamander, a landscape, a portrait of her cousin and a still life portrait of a guitar.   We are excited to hear our scores and can’t wait for it to be over!!  lol   We’ll share our entries and post them here after the competition.      Thanks for reading!!  Enjoy your day!
